Budget Saving Beauty Tips

Grooming September 9th, 2010

Personal care items like make-up, shampoo, and nail polish can all break the bank if you’re not careful. But instead of sacrificing beauty pleasures, there are easy ways to save money and still look your best.

First, when it comes to hair care, do it yourself every once in a while. Many women make frequent trips to the salon for simple root touch-ups or bang trims. These quick visits can really add up.

Instead, try doing your hair at home in between full-scale trips to the salon. For example, many hair care brands offer at home root touch-up kits. They come with easy to follow instructions and brushes that allow you to apply the cream color exactly where you want it. At around $8 a kit, they will save you a bundle each month.

Another helpful hair care tip is to simply consolidate your products. If you have several shampoo bottles that are more than half way empty, combine them all together. This will not only save you from throwing away good products simply because they’re hard to reach, but it will also save you time in the morning.

When it comes to make-up, think multi-use products. Some popular make-up brands are creating products that can be used for several different application purposes, like lipstick, eye shadow and blush. These handy instruments will again, save time and money in your beauty budget. And don’t be afraid to ask department store make-up counters for samples of your favorite products. Trying before buying will ensure you choose the right shade and save a few bucks.

Here’s a great tip for nail care. Many women love going to the nail salon for that “just manicured” look, but can’t afford to keep up that habit every week. Instead, return to the salon each week for a simple polish change rather than a full manicure. This service costs less than $10, and you still get the professional touch you enjoy. Also, if you purchase an at-home manicure set, you can do the work that keeps your cuticles and nails looking great in between salon visits.

There are also several natural beauty tips that you can employ with ingredients found in your pantry at home. To reduce skin redness and the appearance of pores, try green tea. Brew a batch of tea, soak two cotton rounds in the liquid and apply to skin. To brighten skin without paying for an expensive facial, add a little lemon juice to your facial scrub. If you don’t have a favorite facial or body scrub, try mixing brown sugar with honey to exfoliate skin. For acne control, try using Pepto-Bismol as a facial mask. Apply a thin layer to the face and let dry, then remove. The mask with tighten and dry skin, so be sure to apply a moisturizer following the process.

With these helpful tips you can be on your way to saving big bucks while also looking and feeling your best.

Has this happened to you?

You’re strolling up to a cash register to make your purchase. The cashier rings you out and asks, “Would you like to donate $1 to (some charity)?”

You weren’t planning on spending an extra dollar. You aren’t even completely sure of the cause in question. But it’s just a dollar, and you’d feel like a jerk if you said, “no.”

Or maybe, you refuse donations without thinking twice.

Resisting the Temptation to Buy

Shopping June 17th, 2010

I’m a shopper. I love to shop. Online I love to visit sites from all over the world, to see how fashion, even as it becomes more and more the same, still stays culturally unique. (There’s an American look, for example, that I’ll never be able to shed.) I love to go into stores and trail my fingers through the blouses, pick up chatchkes, handle knick-knacks, flip through books. I love looking at couches and imagining how they would fit in my house.
